Aidan's story

On March 11, 2009, Rob took Aidan to his pediatrician because he had been having leg pain for about three weeks. After examining Aidan, the doctor told Rob to take Aidan to Children’s Mercy South for an x-ray. Aidan’s leg was x-rayed and Rob was told that they had found an abnormality. Rob was told to take Aidan straight to Children’s Mercy downtown to be admitted for an MRI and biopsy. A biopsy was taken on the 12th and we learned on March 16 that Aidan has Osteosarcoma (bone cancer). Aidan was admitted to Children’s Mercy on March 20 and began chemotherapy on March 21.
Aidan will have six rounds of chemotherapy before having resection surgery sometime in June. During the surgery, the tumor as well as part of the bone that has been affected by the tumor will be removed. Because of his young age and the amount of growing he has yet to do, his options are limited. He will likely undergo rotationplasty which is a modified amputation of his leg. After surgery, he will resume approximately 14 more rounds of chemotherapy over a course of 7-8 months.
Aidan is a bright, energetic 5-year-old boy who loves cars, trains, construction trucks and emergency vehicles. He is the big brother to 3-year-old sister, Keely.
